I know I’m not the only one whose nightstand is home to a teetering stack of books. Most entrepreneurs are avid knowledge gatherers, knowing that they can learn from the creative genius of those who have come before them. But sometimes that knowledge seeking starts at the book gathering stage and never progresses.
Be honest, how many books have been on your reading list (and maybe that bedside table) for the better part of 2020 without being opened, let alone finished? How many of us look at our bookshelves or Kindle library and see more unfinished than finished titles? Why is this?
Make 2021 the Year of Finishing
There are many number of reasons we don’t finish books. Sometimes, we get what we need from a book early on, and we set it aside. More often, we find excuses not to read, we lose interest partway through the book, the book doesn’t deliver on its promise, or we find that “being the best book for business people of 2020” doesn’t mean the book is a great fit (or even a great book).
Unfinished books can weigh down our self-esteem, becoming one more thing we need to – but don’t quite make the time to – get done. I want you to have sky high self esteem as you embark on your dream business venture! So we must set ourselves up for reading success.
Choose Few Books. We want to learn it all! This desire leads to us picking too many books. If it takes at least 30 days of consistent effort to change one habit, then it will take even longer to implement an entire system as recommended by so many business and growth books. Cut yourself some slack and narrow your focus by annually choosing to read a few books and deeply integrate the information into your business and life.
Choose the Right Books. With Amazon one-day delivery and Kindle at our fingertips, it’s easy to hear about a book and own it almost immediately. But we need to be more discerning. A book recommended by a friend is a great place to start to consider it, but is it applicable to your industry, your specific organization, and/or your personality? Not every book is relevant to your entrepreneurial journey. Also, do you like the author’s writing style? Audible allows you to listen to a snippet of the book, and you can view internal pages on Amazon before buying. Read reviews and clarify if the book is going to be a good fit before buying.
Choose for Your Whole Life. While entrepreneurship feels all-consuming at times, it’s important to remember we are whole people with other priorities including our physical health, our mental wellness, our relationships, and our personal ambitions. If, in 2020, you read only business books, make sure you balance that in 2021 by including some books that support the other areas of your life.
Choose Books You Actually Like. Reading is so much harder when you have to slog through something you don’t enjoy. Though you may be reading a book for growth, it doesn’t have to be boring or feel like hard work. You should feel inspired by what you read, so do yourself the favor of choosing books that are entertaining and interesting while inducing you to evolve. No matter what lists the book tops or which mentor recommended it to you, if you don’t enjoy the book, you are much less likely to finish it and to retain or assimilate the information.
